Our partnership with the Forest Stewardship Council® has helped lead the way for the future of forests.

For a decade, we’ve been working with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®), an independent, non-government organization dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests. FSC® was formed in 1993 to halt deforestation and safeguard forests –by using the power of the marketplace.

In 2006, FSC® approached Kimberly-Clark about joining in this mission and we were keen to partner. Caring is one of our company values and caring about the future of our communities and our planet is important to all of us at Kimberly-Clark.

“Working together in collaboration with FSC® has driven phenomenal results that have mutually benefited both organizations,” said Adi Chindhy, Global Fiber Procurement Director at Kimberly-Clark. “We increased the amount of FSC-certified virgin fiber in our tissue products from just seven percent in 2006 to more than 75 percent in 2015.”

The FSC® symbol lets people know a particular paper product comes from sustainably managed sources, and when consumers choose FSC–labeled products, it sends a message to manufacturers that there is demand for more environmentally-friendly products.

The power of the marketplace

By having FSC®’s trademark on packaging for products like Andrex, Cottonelle, Kleenex and Scott, we’re using the strong reputation of our brands to raise awareness of responsible forestry around the world.

The impact of carrying the FSC® trademark on so many well-known brands is that third-party certification is now becoming something people look for when purchasing bath and tissue products.

Why FSC?®

People all around the world trust our products. So we know we have a great responsibility to protect the environment and care for communities.

FSC® shares this commitment with an emphasis on social engagement. FSC® encourages its members to work together in the regions where they live. It also has stringent standards protecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples by requiring informed consent from them over their lands’ resources.

In addition to promoting responsible forestry, partnering with FSC® reinforces the social promise of our brands to our consumers, customers, employees and communities.

Our leadership role

Kimberly-Clark is a global representative for tissue companies that work with FSC®. We’re active on the FSC® General Assembly, which explores how revisions to FSC®’s standards, guidelines and statutes can address new challenges. And Kimberly-Clark’s Senior Director of Global Sustainability, Lisa Morden, serves on the U.S. FSC® Board of Directors.

“It’s important to us that the materials going into our products reinforce our sustainability goals,” said Morden. “So even as we increase our use of alternative fibers, we’re using environmentally preferred FSC®-certified or recycled fibers, which help us reduce our impact on the environment.”
