According to a recent study commissioned by Huggies brand as a
part of its Every Little Bottom initiative, one in three American
moms struggle with diaper need. These moms have had to cut back on
basics such as food, utilities like heat or electricity, or even
child care in order to provide enough diapers for their babies.
Kimberly-Clark employees in Knoxville, Tennessee, recently got
together to create awareness of this issue, raise some money for
the local United Way and generate diaper donations for those in
need in the greater Knoxville area.
On a Thursday morning in late October, Kimberly-Clark employees
gathered in Knoxville's Market Square to form a "human chain of
caring." The "chain" passed 100 cases of Pull-Ups training pants
donated by Kimberly-Clark from the delivery truck to Market Square
for the benefit of diaperLove, a charity with East Tennessee roots
that donates diapers to families in need.
Kimberly-Clark also donated $2,500, enough to buy 150,000
diapers to help 750 babies for one month. In addition,
Kimberly-Clark donated 100 cases of diapers to be sold to the
public with proceeds benefiting the United Way. With each case
sold, another case of diapers was donated to diaperLove.
"We are passionate about helping moms and babies in need because
they are at the core of several Kimberly-Clark brands, including
Pull-Ups and Huggies," says Michael Lett, Lean/Continuous
Improvement consultant for Kimberly-Clark. "Getting involved in the
diaper need solution is a natural fit for us. With the help of
organizations like diaperLove and events like this, we hope
revealing this issue and building awareness motivates others to get
involved."
It was an inspirational time for Kimberly-Clark employees, who
were moved by the statistics and the level of support for the cause
from the community.
"This event touched my heart so much as the mother of a
3-year-old who wasn't always as fortunate as now," says one K-C
employee. "I remember struggling to buy diapers and knowing we
helped mommies just like me is an absolutely incredible feeling. So
proud to work here."
