Small, local charities across the U.K. that ordinarily are unable to capture the attention of large corporate donors have been benefiting from the donation of Kimberly-Clark products for nearly 12 years.

Kimberly-Clark has been supporting In Kind Direct, a nonprofit organization based in the U.K., with donations since 1998. Kimberly-Clark U.K. donates surplus product – usually trial runs or products with slight defects that do not impact the products’ quality, such as printing errors on packaging. Donations consist of a range of U.K.-manufactured products – mostly Andrex bath tissue, Kleenex facial tissue, Huggies baby wipes, and Kimberly-Clark Professional products such as bath tissue and hand towels.

In Kind Direct, in turn, redistributes these new goods donated by K-C and many more of Britain’s best-known manufacturers and retailers to thousands of voluntary organizations in the U.K. and abroad.

It’s not just the smaller charities that benefit – other beneficiaries include well-known U.K. nonprofits such as Age Concern, Barnardo’s, Emmaus and the Salvation Army. Since our partnership began, Kimberly-Clark products have benefited 1,797 U.K. charities. Since 1998, Kimberly-Clark has donated a total of 3,429 pallets with an estimated value of £2.3 million (about US$3.8 million).

In Kind Direct was founded by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales and is one of 19 of The Prince’s Charities.

To honor Kimberly-Clark’s contributions and inspire others to follow its lead, The Prince of Wales presented the organization’s Founder’s Award in 2007 to Giles Turrell, president of Kimberly-Clark Consumer Europe. This was only the second Founder’s Award ever to be presented by In Kind Direct.

“Sustainability is a core value at Kimberly-Clark,” Turrell said. “We know that making better choices for the environment and society can often mean making better choices for our business. Our long-standing partnership with In Kind Direct is a great example of this. Over the years, it’s proved to be one that makes sustainable sense. Charities benefit, surplus product does not go into a landfill, and K-C does not bear the expense of storing large quantities of obsolete stock in our warehouses.”

“Consistent generosity and farsightedness in donating products to In Kind Direct makes Kimberly-Clark’s leadership a shining example of how companies and charities can effectively work together to benefit disadvantaged communities,” said Robin Boles, chief executive of In Kind Direct. “Kimberly-Clark has been a stalwart supporter of In Kind’s work over many years, and our partnership has ultimately helped hundreds of thousands of people in need and at the same time preserved scarce resources of the charities which serve them.”
